Care

.Caring for your Fleecy pots

Before you use them

Keep unused pots in their tube, somewhere cool and dry. Wool is natural, so keep them out of damp sheds and away from moths until you're ready to sow.

Filling and sowing

Open a pot out, fill it with seed-raising mix, and press it down gently so it holds its shape. Sit the pots side by side in a seed tray so they support each other. Sow your seeds or pop in a seedling, then water well.

Watering

The wool soaks up water and releases it slowly, so you'll usually water less than with plastic. Watering from below works well: pour water into the tray and let the wool draw it up. Check by touch. If the wool feels dry, it's time to water. Avoid leaving pots sitting in a puddle for days.

Light and airflow

Give seedlings plenty of light and a little space between trays so air can move around the pots. Good airflow keeps the wool and the seedlings healthy.

Planting out

Plant out within 6–10 weeks of sowing, once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves. Water the pot well first, dig a hole a little deeper than the pot, and plant the whole thing. Firm the soil around it and water again. Roots grow straight through the wool, so there's no need to tip anything out.

After planting

Leave the pot in the ground. It breaks down over 3–6 months, feeding your soil as it goes.

Good to know

  • Fleecy pots are designed to break down. Kept indoors for a long time without being planted, they'll slowly start to do just that.
  • Each pot is single use. Once it's in the ground, it's working for your garden.
